Paul Millsap Reminds Jazz Why They Paid Him
Filed under: Jazz
You'll be unsurprised to learn Carlos Boozer is in pain, taking the weekend off for treatment on his strained calf. Time for Paul Millsap to reintroduce himself. The Kings were the first to remake his acquaintance, getting pounded by Millsap's 32-and-14 night Friday, with Paul just simply dominating the second half. Some have phrased the alarm as a "move Boozer" siren; others, taking a cue from the man with the golden stopwatch, suggest Millsap-Boozer will push slumping Mehmet Okur to a lesser role.
The Jazz have surged of late, but this really ought to serve as a wag of the finger to the previously eluded to Jerry Sloan, who hasn't used Millsap nearly as much as he should have this season. Millsap, in the first season of his four-year, $32 million contract, has averaged 26 minutes a night for Sloan, producing as always in his relatively limited minutes.

Popovich Retreats in War Against Grizzlies
Filed under: Grizzlies, Lakers, Spurs, NBA Coaches
Back when the Grizzlies pawned off All-Star Pau Gasol to the Lakers in exchange for That Kwame Brown, still-in-Spain and quite pudgy Marc Gasol and a couple low draft picks, critics were everywhere ... including the Spurs locker room. San Antonio chieftain Gregg Popovich humbly requested that other franchises stop creating superpowers for the hell of it, and glibly suggested the league create a veto committee to overrule blatantly unbalanced deals.Turns out the younger Gasol is darn good, and the Grizzlies might have known what they were doing back in '07. Pau's eventual power forward replacement Zach Randolph in an All-Star, Memphis is in the playoff picture, and Grizz GM Chris Wallace is even being credited for his long-term vision. Heck, the Grizz might even catch up with the Spurs in the standings this year -- if S.A. hadn't beat Memphis Friday, the teams would be tied for second in the Southwest.

Video: Hedo Turkoglu Does Not Enjoy Post-Game Interviews
Filed under: Raptors, NBA Videos
Hedo Turkoglu has, for the most part, not lived up to expectations this season for the Raptors. But on Thursday, he was the main reason that his team was able to get a two-point road victory over the Knicks, scoring a season-high 26 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
But you wouldn't know it by his attitude in this walk-off, live television interview afterwards. Turkoglu seems annoyed while answering the first question, then effectively puts an end to the conversation by answering the second one with a single word ("ball") before informing the reporter he has nothing else to say.

Kobe and LeBron Empty Chambers for Nike
Guns. They walk among us. They end lives and protect families. And recently, they've been the latest reason for people to say they'll never watch another NBA game.So naturally, Nike -- the don of all basketball gear-makers -- would pick this week to run a print campaign that features the game's two biggest stars alongside gun-related lingo. In what has to be the worst timing in the history of sports advertising, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James will appear in important national magazines casually referring to their sport, and themselves, in terms ripped from the sinister world of firearms.
That sound you heard was a million intelligent professionals slapping themselves in the forehead and wishing print media could move as fast as the internet.
But wait, it gets worse. They just had to go and accidentally use the one term most reliably associated with the long national nightmare that was Wizardsgate. From ESPN.com:
The Nike ad, inside the cover of this week's editions of ESPN The Magazine and Sports Illustrated, has LeBron James on one page and Kobe Bryant on the other. Along with the slogan, "Prepare For Combat," is a quote from each player showing how tough he is.Needless to say, this is an absolutely terrible idea, and you have to assume that if there were any way to avoid this hitting stands, it wouldn't be. No one in any position to decide anything, even what kind of ice cream they feed the dogs at NASA, would let this ad go through in this current climate. I would encourage Nike to send little kids out the intercept and destroy every issue containing these advertisements, lest its good name and its two of its most valuable brands not be, ummm, caught in the crossfire.
Bryant's blurb says: "I'll do whatever it takes to win games. I don't leave anything in the chamber."

Connecticut WNBA All-Star Site Once Again
Filed under: WNBA
Further confirmation that Connecticut is fast becoming the capital state of women's basketball:For the second straight year, the WNBA will be holding its annual All-Star Game on July 10 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
But instead of the usual East vs. West format, the WNBA All-Stars will face off against the U.S. National team, now being coached by University of Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma.
WNBA president Donna Orender called it a "unique twist," but it's actually the second time the U.S. team has participated in the WNBA All-Star Game.
The process for selecting the teams will be largely the same.

David Stern Explains Gilbert Arenas, Javaris Crittenton Suspensions
Filed under: Wizards, NBA Police Blotter
Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton were suspended by the NBA for the remainder of the season on Wednesday, and in an afternoon conference call, commissioner David Stern made his reasoning for the severity of the punishment for the two Washington Wizards players as plain as possible."We have preached to them in writing, and actually in person, on this very subject, and yet they brandished firearms, and that just cannot be tolerated,'' Stern said.
The NBA's action puts a finite number on the indefinite suspension slapped on Arenas Jan. 6, after he mocked the growing publicity over the Dec. 21 confrontation with Crittenton in the team's Verizon Center locker room with his comments and by pantomiming firing guns in a pregame huddle. It also disciplines Crittenton for his role in the incident, for which he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of unregistered firearm possession in Washington, D.C. Superior Court on Monday.

Greg Oden Apologizes for Nude Pictures
Greg Oden apologized to his fans and the Portland Trail Blazers organization on Tuesday evening, several hours after nude self-portraits of the injured center surfaced on the internet.Oden indicated several times during his meeting with reporters that the pictures were taken a year and a half ago and were solely intended for "lady friend" with whom he was in a relationship at the time, adding several times that he's already learned from the mistake.
"First, I would like to apologize to everybody, Portland, fans, the organization," he told reporters before taking questions. "It was very embarrassing. It was something that happened over a year and a half ago. It was taken and sent over a year and a half ago. I'm very sorry and I'm definitely embarrassed for my family and everybody around me."

Once Overlooked, Now Hard to Ignore: Wallace Deserves All-Star Bid
Filed under: Bobcats, NBA All-Star Game
Check out the 2004 Charlotte Bobcats expansion draft. There was a Sampson. No, not Ralph. Jamal.
There was a Peja. No, not Stojakovic. Drobnjak.
There was a J.R. No, not Smith. Bremer.
But on that list of mostly forgettable names there was a Wallace. Maybe it wasn't Ben or Rasheed, but Gerald Wallace has a chance to go down as one of the all-time greatest picks in an expansion draft.
On Thursday, when East All-Star reserves are announced, it would be an injustice if Wallace doesn't hear his name called.
