Stoke 1 Arsenal 3: Ramsey's horror injury overshadows Gunners victory

Exactly two years ago, Arsenal players could not handle the horrible double leg-break that Eduardo sustained after a tackle by Martin Taylor in a game at Birmingham City.

Nets Beat Celtics for Win No. 6

It has been said that the Nets are not as bad as their record, that the collection of talent in New Jersey blue is much better than the 5-52 record the team brought into its Saturday afternoon soirée in Boston. I'm not sure I buy that. Brook Lopez and Devin Harris are handsome and talented gents, but the depth is more shallow than a kiddie pool in North Korea. The team struggles to defend, struggles even more to score ... just struggles to be any sort of foil for its opponents.

The Celtics, however, saw a different enemy Saturday. A focused, performing Nets team. A Lopez who just incinerated stout defender Kendrick Perkins, a Courtney Lee who scorched from the perimeter, a Harris who controlled the game. Boston dug a pit it couldn't escape, trailing by 10 entering the fourth and eventually succumbing 104-96. It was New Jersey's sixth win in 58 games this season.

The Celtics looked, and look, completely spent. Kevin Garnett, bless him, looked like a man who needed a wheelchair. If I saw the Kevin Garnett from Saturday's game crossing a street, I would stop to help him across. I'd carry his shopping bags. He scored well, but was burnt by (ready for it?) Kris Humphries in a critical possession. He was quite literally limping up and down the floor. I have no idea why he's playing on a knee so obviously causing him so much pain. It's the end of February, not May. There's no way Boston falls below fourth place in the East. Let the man try to heal.

Lakers Not Ready to Call Nuggets a Rival

Kobe Bryant and Carmelo AnthonyLOS ANGELES -- To the Lakers, the Nuggets are like that bothersome little brother who always wants to offer a challenge.

For the little brother, it might be marbles, ping-pong or checkers. For the Nuggets, it's challenging the Lakers' supremacy in the NBA's Western Conference.

The little brother sometimes wins, but the big brother usually takes charge when it counts. Then again, if the little guy practices hard enough, sometimes even that can change.

So far this season, the Nuggets are 2-0 against the Lakers, with Game 3 Sunday at the Staples Center. You'd think Denver, which has won the games by an average margin of 19.5 points, really has gotten the attention of the Lakers. But that's not completely true.

Lakers center Andrew Bynum did call it a "statement'' game, one his team needs to win. But teammate and star guard Kobe Bryant quickly shot that down.

"He's young,'' Bryant said of Bynum. "I don't think it's a statement. I think it's an important game in terms of stepping up and responding to the challenge, their physicality. ... But 'statement game' is a little too strong.''

Family Comes First for Absent Iverson

Filed under:

LOS ANGELES -- Allen Iverson has taken plenty of heat in the past year for insisting on being in an NBA starting lineup. But there's another starting five Iverson cares a lot more about.

That would be his five kids. In fact, Iverson joked when his fifth one arrived in October 2008 that he had a full lineup.

Throughout his career, family has always been more important to the Philadelphia guard than basketball. On many occasions, he has taken the podium for a post-game interview with one of his kids on his lap or sitting next to him.

So it has surprised no one close to Iverson that he has taken another leave of absence to be with his 4-year-old daughter, Messiah, who is being treated for an undetermined illness.

Report: MJ Strikes Deal to Buy Bobcats

Michael JordanMichael Jordan has struck a deal to buy controlling interest of the Charlotte Bobcats, taking charge of the money-losing team in his home state.

Traci Blunt, a spokeswoman for owner Bob Johnson, told The Associated Press that Jordan was able to put together an ownership group late Friday to buy the team he has been a part-owner of since 2006. Jordan has been running the team's basketball operations.

The purchase price was not immediately available.

Former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos also bid on the Bobcats. The NBA's owners still must approve the purchase.

The deal will end Johnson's largely unsuccessful stint as the first black majority owner of a major professional sports team.

Parise?s 2 goals put US men in semis

The longer it went, the tighter the Americans got. They clanged shots off the post, then the crossbar. A wrist shot early in the game by Phil Kessel that looked like a bad omen hit both. Everything else the U.S. hockey team threw on net Wednesday, Swiss goalie Jonas Hiller smothered. But Zach Parise put all that frustration aside, deflecting a wrist shot from Brian Rafalski early in the third period.

Canada rips Russia 7-3 to reach semis

Canada didn’t need a complex game plan to wear down its biggest nemesis or punish Alex Ovechkin. Canada simply needed to be Canada. The Canadians ended 50 years of Olympic hockey frustration against the Russians, surging into the Olympic semifinals with a 7-3 romp over the world champions Wednesday by going back to the game they play best.

Thabeet Becomes Highest Pick Ever Assigned to D-League

Hasheem Thabeet, the second overall pick in the NBA Draft, selected ahead of Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, and about twenty other rookies getting significant minutes, has been assigned to the D-League. D-League blog Ridiculous Upside was the first to break the story.

Thabeet is the highest draft pick ever to be assigned to the D-League. Thabeet will be with the Dakota Wizards for ten days, logging a handful of games.

He's been told to work on his offensive skills. Which is a little bit like sending someone to Betty Ford and saying, "Oh, and you should work on NOT having substance abuse problems." It's kind of obvious from the fact they woke up naked on the hood of their car.

Cavs Go Small to Topple Celtics

The Cavaliers brought in Shaquille O'Neal to add more size. The Cavaliers traded for Antawn Jamison to add a stretch four that was versatile while not losing size. The Cavaliers will undoubtedly re-sign Zydrunas Ilgauskas following his buyout to add more size.

And yet, it was the Cavaliers going small that helped them to a 108-88 win over over the Boston Celtics, in Boston.

Horse breeder on trial in NY for animal cruelty

The 177 horses seized in a raid of an upstate New York farm last year were malnourished, a prosecutor said Tuesday at the start of the trial of the farm’s owner, a prominent thoroughbred horse breeder who was banned from racing. Ernie Paragallo, the former owner of 1996 Kentucky Derby favorite and fifth-place finisher Unbridled’s Song, was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty…

Antawn Jamison Finally Has Reason to Smile in Cleveland

Antawn JamisonINDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- It wasn't long after he was traded that Antawn Jamison flashed back to the last time he was in Cleveland.

He would be excused if the memory caused him to get cold chills.

Because that game came the day after Gilbert Arenas had pulled the "pretend pistol" act in Washington's pregame huddle in Philadelphia, the "pretend pistol" act that caused NBA commissioner David Stern to suspend Arenas and say he was not mentally or emotionally fit to play.

With Arenas gone and the Wizards in Cleveland, Jamison was left to try to explain things for his team.

"We were in disarray and we didn't know what was going to happen," Jamison said. "It was one of those situations where it wasn't a pretty one."

No Buyout for Gooden, but Ilgauskas' Buyout Finalized

Drew GoodenLOS ANGELES -- Before Wednesday night's game against Detroit, coach Kim Hughes was hopeful his Los Angeles Clippers would not buy out the contract of forward Drew Gooden by Monday's deadline. But he said there wasn't certainty.

There is now.

"We're going to keep him,'' Clippers general manager Mike Dunleavy said in phone interview shortly thereafter with FanHouse from Lexington, Ky., where he will scout Thursday's game between Kentucky and South Carolina. "There's no 'probably.'''

That could put an end to the list of marquee players who will be bought out by the March 1 deadline in order to be eligible for the playoffs with another team. The Washington Post reported Wednesday night a buyout has been reached with center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and earlier in the day Sacramento had finalized a buyout with guard Larry Hughes.

Canada benches Brodeur, Luongo to start

Martin Brodeur is out as Canada’s Olympic goaltender. Hello, Roberto Luongo — at least for Tuesday’s qualification game against Germany. Canada coach Mike Babcock decided to bench Brodeur — the NHL career victories leader — after he allowed four goals on 22 shots during a 5-3 upset loss to the United States on Sunday.

Chargers release Tomlinson after 9 years

After nine mostly brilliant seasons, LaDainian Tomlinson was cut loose by the San Diego Chargers. Slowed by injuries and age, Tomlinson would have been paid more to produce less in a Chargers offense that was turning toward the passing game, and on Monday one of the NFL’s best running backs was officially released.
