All the Pretty Rookies of the Year

Filed under:

What a year it was. Actually, it's not over yet. But this regular season was really one for the ages, due in no small part to all the totally awesome rookie we fell in love with. How often do you have three legit Rookie of the Year candidates, each of them putting up All-Star-ish numbers, each with their own rabid camp of supporters? And it doesn't stop there. We got to see so many other rookies play well, or at least behave notably enough that, with the regular season through, we feel they all deserve a chocolate-chip pancake.

Therefore, rather than live with the single ROY award that's customary in the league, or the co-ROY that's been known to happen, we went ahead and gave out 35 separate little imaginary trophies. One for each first-rounder, and then honors for some second-rounders of note. Drink up, enjoy, and remember, even dwarves start small and only the good die young. Or, to reprise something they taught us once in grade school, everyone's special in their own way. It just takes a highly-trained writer to take time and describe it. Good luck, Class of 2009, may this be the first of many plaudits you earn as one and as many.

FanHouse TV: Spurs Take Down the Mavs

Dirk NowitzkiThe Dallas Mavericks entered the playoffs as the Western Conference's 2nd seed.

On Thursday night, they exited the playoffs at about the same time they seem to every year, falling in Game 6 to the Spurs.

FanHouse's Rob Peterson takes a look at the key to the series, and spins some perspective on another Dallas disappointment.

Ochoa saying goodbye this week in Mexico

Michael Whan had several weeks to come up with a plan to talk Lorena Ochoa out of retiring after this week’s Tres Marias Championship. The LPGA commissioner offered one last pitch on Wednesday to the 28-year-old Mexican, who has been ranked No. 1 for three years but is leaving to raise a family and elevate the profile of her charity foundation.

Hey Jenn Sterger ? Stay Classy

Hey Jenn Sterger … Stay Classy. This touching video features Jenn Sterger, whose only only claim to fame is being a Florida State “fan” that showed cleavage. Jenn was promoting her new show on VS TV called “The Daily Line”. The young lady goes on to admit why she was fashionably late.

It seems like she is very lucky to have taken her 15 minutes of fame, and stretched it into 16 minutes. No one knew anything about her. For all anyone knew, she could’ve been quite the intellectual. Now that she has her own show, this is the persona she wishes everyone to know.

Jazz-Nuggets Notebook: Kyrylo Fesenko Gets Noticed

Kyrylo FesenkoDENVER -- Kyrylo Fesenko was doing his usual playoff scouting late last Sunday night. After each game in Utah's first-round series against Denver, the center has watched all of the post-game press conferences on the Internet.

"You might pick up something,'' Fesenko said.

What Fesesko had to pick up after last Sunday's Game 4 was his jaw off the floor. Fesenko thought he had heard Denver star Carmelo Anthony mention his name.

"I saw it and I had to rewind it,'' Fesenko said. "I was like, 'Did he really say something about me.' Wow. That was kind of cool.''

Indeed, Anthony did speak of the obscure Ukrainian who has been called into starting duty with Mehmet Okur having been lost for the season in Game 1 with a ruptured Achilles. It wasn't exactly complimentary.

"Fesenko? Fesenko?'' Anthony said after Utah's 117-106 win that gave the Jazz a 3-1 series lead. "Don't get me wrong. He's playing extremely well. He's playing with a lot of confidence. But Fesenko?''

Woodson May Go Down as Hawks Slip

Mike WoodsonThis does not bode well for Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson, whose contract extension might have just flown out the window.

His team has improved its win total in each of the last five years -- showing slow, steady improvement -- but all that feel-good stuff is about to get lost in a surprising, first-round playoff series against the undermanned but more motivated Milwaukee Bucks.

Woodson, who becomes a coaching free agent this summer, has good reason to be nervous. The Hawks talked all through this 53-win season about finally arriving as championship contenders.

Today they are one loss away from being the victims of a stunning upset, trailing 3-2 after blowing a nine-point lead in the final four minutes Wednesday, losing 91-87 to the Bucks.

"It's a terrible loss, embarrassing,'' said Hawks star Joe Johnson, also a free agent this summer. "It's the same thing, effort, toughness, that's killing us. Everybody here should check themselves in the mirror.''

Dallas Breaks Out the Big D in Game 5

Dallas coach Rick Carlisle doesn't seem like the kind of guy who has many "Eureka!" moments. He has the face of an accountant, and for the past three games in the first round series between his Mavs and the Spurs, he coached like an accountant, too.

All the No. 2 pencils have been sharpened, aligned and ready to scribble. All the actuarial sheets were blank and ready to be filled. Every number has been methodlically checked and double-checked. Yet, for Games 2, 3 and 4, no matter how he crunched the numbers, Carlisle saw the results add up to a loss.

So, somewhere between the end of Game 4 and on the brink of elimination, Carlisle noticed some numbers that did work: 15-4; as in the Mavs' record when Brendan Haywood started, including a 12-4 record when Haywood joined the quartet of Jason Kidd, Caron Butler, Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki.

That record improved to 16-4 on Tuesday as Haywood's defensive energy fueled a 103-81 poleaxing of the arch-rival Spurs in Dallas. Game 6 is Thursday in San Antonio.

"Eureka!" indeed. Then again, Carlisle undersold the process of how the lineup change came about. It wasn't exactly Archimedes leaping naked out of a tub.

Dwyane Wade Ponders Future After Celtics Bounce Heat From Playoffs

Dwyane WadeDespite the heroic and somewhat supernatural performance from Dwyane Wade in Game 4 of his Heat's victory over the Celtics, no one believed that it was something that could be sustained.

Wade, by putting up 46 points on Sunday to make sure his team would avoid a sweep, made one last statement this season that behind LeBron James' No. 1 status this summer as a free agent, he's as close to a 1A that the league has to offer.

So it was of little surprise that once the series shifted to Boston for Game 5 the Celtics were able to close out Miami, 96-86, in a game that sent the Heat home for the summer -- and the Celtics to a second-round matchup against the top-seeded Cavaliers.

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals is scheduled for Saturday in Cleveland.

Adrian Dantley Tested as Nuggets Threaten to Implode

Adrian DantleyDENVER -- Adrian Dantley claims he's OK. He insists there's no need for team officials to put him on a 24-hour watch.

"I talk to a lot of people and they act like I'm going to commit suicide or something,'' said the Denver Nuggets acting coach.

Dantley said others call him up as if he's "going to have a mental breakdown.''

With his heavily favored Nuggets down 3-1 in a West first-round series against Utah, that Dantley is able to maintain his sense of humor is one of the few good things the team has going for it these days.

Dantley has had to replace George Karl, who hasn't been on the bench since March 16 as he battles a form of throat cancer. Now, he's got a team that could be on the verge of imploding -- if that hasn't already happened.

Magic Sweep Despite Howard's New 'Foul On You' Nickname

Dwight Howard Foul on you

Dwight Howard
could laugh about his temporary change of nicknames, from the Superman moniker he loves to the "Foul On You'' tag he was playfully given by his teammates a few days ago.

It might not be a joking matter in the next series.

The Magic completed a first-round sweep of the Charlotte Bobcats Monday night, doing it with a glaring absence of Howard, who went from franchise center to franchise foul throughout the series.

It was the first time in history the Magic ever have swept a playoff opponent in a seven-game series, but they strangely did it without the dominance they have come to expect from Howard.

Share

They should get plenty of rest before meeting the winner of the Milwaukee and Atlanta series, which is tied at two. Neither of those teams, though, will be as forgiving if Howard doesn't rediscover the game that made him a Most Valuable Player candidate during the regular season.
