Emotional Scottie Pippen Wins $2 Million Lawsuit Verdict
Filed under: Bulls
Scottie Pippen left the courthouse in tears with wife Larsa Pippen after a Cook County jury awarded him a $2 million verdict in a legal malpractice case."I don't want to really say anything, I'm just exhausted and tired," the former Chicago Bulls star told the Chicago Sun-Times on Monday.
Pippen, who has reportedly lost $120 million in career earnings since his retirement in 2004, sued two attorneys at the Chicago law firm Pedersen & Houpt for a total of $8.2 million. Pippen alleged the attorneys failed to closely monitor his 2002 purchase of a jet, which was grounded only months after he bought it, for upgrades and refurbishing the interior.
Pippen reportedly spent $4.3 million on the Gulfstream II corporate jet.
The jury ruled that Pippen deserved blame as well in the bad business deal, awarding him roughly one-quarter of what he asked for. One of the firm's attorneys, Peter Sullivan, argued during opening statements that Pippen was looking for a scapegoat for his poor financial decisions over the years.

Report: Paul Pierce Will Opt Out, Become Free Agent
Filed under: Celtics, NBA Free Agents
Paul Pierce apparently doesn't want to get left out of the party. With so many notable players being free agents this summer, Pierce has elected to join the fun.Pierce's agent has confirmed Pierce will exercise his early termination option in his contract, leaving over $21 million on the table next season while in pursuit of a long-term contract, Ken Berger of CBS reports.
Pierce joins Ray Allen as an unrestricted free agent and will attract his fair share of suitors. The most likely scenario results in Pierce returning to Boston, but either way, this decision will have ramifications for the Celtics and the league.
Even if Pierce signs a max contract, the most he can earn in 2010-11 is $20.8 million -- but he's obviously willing to take a pay cut for one season in exchange for long-term security. And by signing this year, Pierce avoids the uncertainty surrounding the next collective bargaining agreement, which is still being negotiated and will take effect next summer. The new CBA will likely include a reduced salary cap, with a slight chance of a hard cap. By opting out, Pierce enables himself to take advantage of the higher salary structure.
Even as Pierce's athleticism begins to wane with age, he's still a top-notch player for a Finals-contending team. That, combined with the sheer number of teams with available cap space, will result in Pierce getting offers. The Celtics' plan consistently has been to retain Pierce and Allen in order to make one more run with this core. But try to conceptualize a Celtics team with Pierce and Allen playing elsewhere. It's a possibility, no matter how remote.
Pierce has strong ties to California, and was not happy when the Celtics were out of the championship picture. With the C's having just fallen short in the Finals, it's possible he's receptive to leaving the team that drafted him. It's unlikely, but it's out there. The Celtics will actually have some cap room with those two players opting out, but Pierce and Allen are likely the best free agents who would be interested in joining Boston.
So Yao Ming is staying and Paul Pierce is going.
This summer keeps getting weirder and weirder.

No, Tom O’Bryant, Michael Jordan is playing the Celtics.
Welcome to Summer programming at NESW Sports. I will be trying to find some odd/vintage/rare/interesting sports vids to go along with the occasional MLB video that filters through MLB Media’s grasp.
Here we see a rookie Michael Jordan catching a Tom O’Bryant flub. What I like most about the video, besides the MJ vintage warmup, is how similar he looks like Kevin Durant here. ( Note I am not comparing the two. )
My biggest knock on Durant is his size, but I always forget that MJ was also lanky at first. Jordan added to his size and skills each year. I do not know if Durant will follow suit.

Roy Hodgson close to Anfield arrival as Fulham boss opts for Liverpool - EXCLUSIVE
England's World Cup crisis could be thrown further into chaos by the imminent appointment of Fulham chief Roy Hodgson as the new Liverpool manager.
Warkentien Talks to Suns About GM Job
A source told FanHouse that Warkentien, the Nuggets vice president of basketball operations, was granted permission to speak with the Suns, and he talked this week on the phone to Phoenix owner Robert Sarver.
The source said Warkentien's preference is to remain with the Nuggets after his contract expires Aug. 31. But no deal has been reached on a contract extension, and Warkentien wanted to speak to the Suns.
The source said no formal interview has been set up by Phoenix with Warkentien, and it's believed the Suns are going to take their time in searching for a replacement for Steve Kerr, who will not return when his contract expires Wednesday. The source said San Antonio assistant general manager David Lindsey already has interviewed with Sarver, but that it could be a month or so before the job is filled.
Also not returning to the Suns after his contract expires Wednesday is vice president of basketball operations David Griffin. That leaves Sarver and coach Alvin Gentry to handle the free agency period. The two will be in Los Angeles on Tuesday to deliver a final exclusive pitch to star Phoenix forward Amar'e Stoudemire, who is likely to opt out of his contract and become a free agent Thursday.
Among other general manager jobs open or possibly available: Portland president Larry Miller has said Warkentien won't be considered for the Trail Blazers; Warkentien does not now appear to be a candidate in New Jersey; and the Clippers appear to be sticking with Neil Olshey, who replaced the fired Mike Dunleavy last March.
But Warkentien's preference is to remain with the Nuggets. And that might happen.

Raptors GM Colangelo Admits Chris Bosh Is Likely Gone
Filed under: Raptors, NBA Rumors, NBA Free Agents
When you go down the list of the top free agents this summer -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amar'e Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson -- there's at least a plausible scenario in which a lot of those guys might end up staying with their current teams. But when it comes to Bosh and the Toronto Raptors, very few see that relationship continuing next season and beyond. It isn't only fans and analysts making this prediction. In fact, Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo admitted as much in a recent radio interview, when he said it's not really a matter of if Bosh goes, but more a question of how in terms of what the Raptors will get in return, if anything at all.
"I think it's likely that he will leave," Colangelo told Prime Time Sports on the Fan 590. "The question is will he put us in a position to benefit from the sign and trade scenario that can net him the most money and us something coming back."
Share To anyone following the Bosh situation in Toronto, this really shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Union VP Foyle: Players' Counter Proposal Soon to Reach NBA
Filed under: Magic, Sports Business and Media
NBA players don't want a lockout, which is what could happen one year from Friday. But they aren't going to accept a deal they don't believe is fair. That's the word from union first vice president Adonal Foyle after the NBA Players Association held its annual summer meeting Thursday and Friday at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. About 60 players attended, including star guards Dwyane Wade of Miami and Richard Hamilton of Detroit.
"It's very simple. We don't want a lockout,'' Foyle, an Orlando center, said Sunday in a phone interview with FanHouse about what could occur when the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) expires June 30, 2011. "We think that this business is going very well. But, at the same time, we are preparing guys for the next year just to make sure. We're telling them to save their money more ... We'll take a deal yesterday or take a deal tomorrow. But it has to be a fair deal.''
With the union being very unhappy about a proposal submitted by the owners during last February's All-Star Weekend, one which NBA commissioner David Stern has said is in line with the economic times, union executive director Billy Hunter has said the players will submit a counter proposal by the end of this month.
Share Foyle said the union has made great progress and hopes the proposal will be at the league offices in New York by Wednesday, the final day of the month. Foyle said there could be some delays, but figures the proposal at least will be submitted by early July.

Taurasi Ponders Year Away From WNBA
WASHINGTON -- Diana Taurasi says she's considering taking a break from the WNBA. She probably wishes that sabbatical had started before Sunday.Taurasi, the leading scorer in the WNBA and the league's reigning Most Valuable Player, took a hard fall on her tail bone two-thirds of the way through the third quarter of her Phoenix Mercury's game against the Washington Mystics Sunday afternoon.
Taurasi landed with a sickening thud on the Verizon Center court, and was helped to the Mercury bench. She returned a minute later, but hobbled so badly on one trip up and down the floor that she was scratched for the rest of the game.
"I guess I'm going to get the rest I wanted, huh," said Taurasi through a wan smile after the game. She said she would be day-to-day as the Mercury travel to Atlanta to play the Dream Tuesday.
In an interview with FanHouse before the game, Taurasi, who had 18 points in 21 minutes Sunday, said the grind of playing year-round for seven straight years may lead her to carve out a period for rest, relaxation, and decompression.
Considering that the lion's share of her basketball salary is earned when she plays for a Turkish team during the fall and winter, Taurasi, 28, may take a summer vacation from the WNBA.

As Thorn Exits and LeBron Awaits, Nets Have No Plan B
Filed under: Cavaliers, Clippers, Heat, Knicks, Nets, NBA Rumors, NBA Coaches, NBA Free Agents
Nothing like waiting until the night of the ball to order the limo.Or opening the sparkling new restaurant before the wait staff is hired.
Or, as is the case with the New Jersey Nets and their much-anticipated courting of LeBron James, being days away from 2010 free agency without defined leadership.
Is this really happening?
Is new Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov really proving that the size of the bank account can't always disguise the absence of a savvy plan?
General manager Rod Thorn will indeed walk away next month, with his reasons as unclear as his departure was unexpected. And with James reportedly set to host the Nets, Knicks, Miami, Cleveland and the Clippers in Ohio to weigh his many options, there's simply no way Thorn's exit helps New Jersey's chances at signing the self-proclaimed King. As for the notion that this was all part of Prokhorov's strategy to supplant Thorn with a bigger, more-powerful name like the rumored Jerry Colangelo or Jerry West? It certainly isn't sounding that way.

King James Holds Court Like a True Royal
Filed under: Bulls, Cavaliers, Clippers, Heat, Knicks, Nets, NBA Rumors, NBA Transactions, NBA Free Agents
The plans have apparently changed, with LeBron James opting to hold court with NBA suitors in Ohio instead of jetting around the country on a grand free agency tour. And really, this should have been LeBron's plan all along.Seriously, what royal ever did his business on the road? Travel is for grunts, the legions who expand the kingdom or the tax collectors who see that the treasury remains full. Real kings don't grovel for attention in foreign lands. They let the world come to their beck and call.
And say what you will, but LeBron is the closest thing we've had to real royalty in the NBA in more than a decade.
The planned July tour through at least five NBA cities reported by FanHouse's Sam Amick last month looked like a good if ego-centric idea. But staying at home and entertaining a succession of team executives oozes power, and it paints LeBron in a more respectable light.
Folks will frame the decision as it suits their opinion; some observers would be offended if LeBron went low-key and placed a singles ad. (SBM, MVPx2, 6'8 and fit, ISO multi championships.) But at its core, LeBron holding court at home is a brilliant move.

Thrashers hire Ramsay as coach
Craig Ramsay had to wait a decade for his next chance to be an NHL head coach. His old friend and former roommate, Rick Dudley, provided that opportunity. Ramsay, who spent the last three years as an assistant with the Boston Bruins, was named the Atlanta Thrashers coach on Thursday. He joins Dudley, recently promoted to general manager, as the new leaders of a franchise that is starved for success.

Rod Thorn Refuses Comment on Report of Impending Resignation
Filed under: Nets, NBA Free Agents
Rod Thorn declined comment Friday on an ESPN.com report that he will step down as president of the New Jersey Nets on July 15.The report, citing unnamed sources, said Thorn is not being forced out by new owner Mikhail Prokhorov and that it is entirely his decision to resign.
"I have no comment at this time,'' Thorn said when reached by FanHouse. "I'm sure that they'll be a comment in the future at some point.''
When asked if his unwillingness to comment is an indication he's not denying the report, Thorn said, "It doesn't indicate anything. I just don't have a comment.''
The Nets were recently purchased by Prokhorov, a Russian billionaire. Although Thorn's contract expires June 30, Prokhorov had elected to retain Thorn. The owner said he would not renew the contract of general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, who had finished the season as interim coach, going 12-52 during the Nets' disastrous 12-70 campaign.

Report: No Free Agency Tour For LeBron
Filed under: Cavaliers, Clippers, Heat, Knicks, Nets, NBA Free Agents
LeBron James will not go on a free agency tour, according to ESPN.com, which cited Maverick Carter, the longtime manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers' superstar.
"LeBron is not going on a tour," Carter told the web site, referring to when the free-agency period begins on July 1. "He never planned to go on a tour and has not been a part of any team's plans for a recruiting trip."
Carter's statement is contrary to popular belief, which had the superstar forward poised for a whirlwind trip to different NBA cities, where courting teams could have wined and dined James. Instead, the report said that James will meet with individual teams at a neutral site -- most likely, his home in suburban Akron, Ohio.
Perhaps the most ballyhooed free agent in NBA history, James will have to make his decision while considering issues both on and off the court. In the past, he has said that he intends on trying to become the first billionaire athlete, making a move to a big market all the more tempting.
The New York Knicks -- located in the league's biggest market -- apparently will have to quickly reverse course in their recruitment due to the aforementioned development. ESPN.com reported that the Knicks had planned to throw James a lavish dinner party prepared by a celebrity chef, where famous New Yorkers would try to sell the city to the King.

( Part 2 ) No One Reads Your Stupid BLOG!
( Part 2 ) No One Reads Your Stupid BLOG! In part one of this series we learned that there are a few blogs that people actually read. These blogs are daily must reads. The bloggers have fans. What they say matters.
Who are these people, and how can I become one?
When you start blogging you take the time to learn the ropes. You learn the dos and don’ts. You see who are the big dogs in your field. You learn the social media avenues that your counterparts take. You learn so much, that you start to fancy yourself somewhat of an expert. I mean, all you have to do is follow the path that these other people took, and BAM!!!! You will be an internet success.
Then you write your first post. You quickly discover that No One Reads Your Stupid BLOG!
How did this happen? We followed all the steps that were set in stone as far as the internet can see. It really was stupid of everyone to tell us all of their secrets. We have all of their secrets. We are sitting here with all the secrets … and a blog that no one reads.
This next truth is something that you must learn right now. You must come to grips with it. You must never forget it. You must never deny it.
There are 2 different kinds of very popular bloggers, and for today’s post, only one applies.
You have to be very talented, knowledgeable, and work extremely hard.
Spencer Hall of EDSBS and now SB Nation fame is all of those things. This is not a secret. He wrote about college football. He wrote with passion, and he was noticed. Now he is respected. His Twitter feed is followed closer than my blog. ( Once again, that is not me whining. That is a fact, that you must come to grips with. You want to get to that point, but you are not there. ) If you like college football and know how to turn on the internet, then you know him. If you like sports blogs, then you know him. If you are a sports blogger, then you want to be him.
The internet is full of Spencer Halls. You know them as J.E. Skeets or blah blah blah I’ll spare you the name dropping / brown nosing.
My point is that those people ONLY got there because they were very talented, knowledgeable, and work extremely hard. They did not have any secrets. They did not have the inside track. They did not get a link on Deadspin, and then the next day they were bigger than SI’s Hot Clicks. There are no shortcuts to having all of these things. The respect, fans, readers, and traffic comes as a direct result of the hard work.
If you just want to have a blog for fun, then no one will read it, and you need to happy with that. If you want people to read it, then you need to put a ton of work in.
In part 3 of this series, we will look at the other category of popular bloggers that get traffic. Please do not get excited. That category is harder to get into than this one.
P.S. In the past I have written about how talented Spencer and Skeets are. They are perfect examples of hard work paying off. I hope at some BWB conference that we can all meet up, but I know it will go just like this ( see video below )
