Details Begin to Emerge Surrounding Lorenzen Wright's Death

Lorenzen WrightSome details are beginning to emerge regarding the death of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright.

The police have ruled Wright's death a homicide by gunshot, but they have yet to name any suspects in the case. According to The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, there were some warning signs weeks before Wright's murder.

The paper reported that Sherra Robinson Wright -- Lorenzen Wright's ex-wife -- had her home visited in recent weeks by three unknown men who had guns tucked into their waistband. The men wanted to know if her ex-husband, 34-year-old Lorenzen Wright, was home visiting his six children. When Sherra Wright told them no, the three men drove away. After this occurred, Sherra Robinson Wright quickly told her divorce attorney, Gail Mathes, about the encounter.

When Wright left his residence in Atlanta a few weeks later, he was gunned down a day after his flight arrived in Memphis. His body was found on Wednesday afternoon.

LeBron James Should Stop Trying to Be Like Mike

Michael Jordan

King James is Air Jordan, and Air Jordan was King James, but not in the way that you think.

Here's how you should think: Deception.

More specifically, you should think the fine art of deception. Which, if you believe the Scriptures, always leads to the perpetrator getting exposed at some point with a heavy dose of ugliness.

Exhibit A: Most of the universe didn't know Michael Jordan's public image was a fraud until years after his second Three-Peat with the Chicago Bulls in 1998. The truth dribbled into view -- somewhere between his $168 million divorce settlement and the insufferable (or shall we say insulting?) speech he delivered last year during his induction ceremony into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

No question, much about Jordan was well-crafted fantasy. The lovable superstar no matter what. The everyman with the perfect family. The African-American version of Ed McMahon who wasn't so much into pocketing millions, but who just wanted everybody to have a good pair of underwear and some nice-fitting sneakers.

There is a difference between King James and Air Jordan, though, and it's actually huge. Jordan's image went unblemished on and off the court throughout his playing career. LeBron James continues to dribble with authority in his prime, but when it comes to that self-proclaimed King James, he already is an emperor with no clothes.

Speaking of nakedness, the lengthy campaign by James and his handlers to make King James the next Air Jordan (without the baggage) has flopped, because it suddenly is bare of substance and credibility.

Lorenzen Wright Died of Gunshot Wound, Ruled Homicide

Filed under:

Lorenzen Wright Former NBA and University of Memphis player Lorenzen Wright died as a result of a gunshot wound and police were drawn to the area where his body was found by a 911 call placed more than a week before it was discovered, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement released on Thursday.

The discovery of the body was part of coordinated -- albeit delayed -- effort by a handful of law enforcement agencies who gathered Wednesday morning, hours before their search uncovered Wright's remains.

"Through identification of dental records, the Shelby County Medical Examiner has officially identified the victim as that of Lorenzen Wright," Police Department lieutenant Alan Ruhl said in the news release. "The cause of death has been ruled as homicide by gunshot wound."

The release was the first in which authorities identified Wright, 34, as the body found in southeast Memphis Wednesday afternoon.

Wright was last seen by his ex-wife shortly before midnight on July 18, and family members filed a missing persons report on July 22. Police reportedly didn't originally suspect foul play until a 911 call taken by Germantown, Tenn., dispatcher during the early morning hours of July 19 -- when several gunshots could be heard -- was linked to Wright's cell phone.

Josh Howard Returns to Wizards

Josh Howard will return to the Wizards next season, on a one-year deal that will pay him in the neighborhood of $4 million. And it might not even cost Washington that much.

Michael Lee of The Washington Post reports that the contract will include incentives based on both minutes and games played. But even if Howard hits all of his revenue-generating targets, it's still a pretty good deal for the Wiz, and a sign of just how far Howard's stock has fallen in the eyes of the NBA people who are in charge of cutting the checks.

Howard's previous contract -- the one the Wizards inherited when they dealt for him at the trade deadline -- included a team option for the upcoming season that would have paid the one-time All-Star $11.8 million. But when you consider Howard's off-the-court issues, decline in production, and torn ACL that he suffered a mere four games into his Washington career, it's no surprise that the team declined to pick up that option.

The Buck Showalter Showalter: Dan Haren

The Buck Showalter Showalter: Dan Haren. In this short clip, Buck Showalter explains to us that Dan Haren will be perfectly fine. There is nothing to worry about. There is absolutely no difference between the American and National League.

Well, except for the designated hitter….

Seriously? I know this is a little flub by Buck, but it is idiotic.

There is only one difference between the American and National League. There is only one, and that is the DH. It is a huge difference. If anyone was going to talk about the differences between the two leagues, they would begin and end the conversation with the DH. You do not hear about many pitchers having trouble getting out the opposing pitchers, but then moving the AL and mowing down DH’s.

Hey Buck! Captain Obvious called and he wants a job at ESPN! Can you put in a good word for him. Oh, you just did.

I know I am being picky, but this urcked me. This is what the BBTN analysts get paid for? “It is not a big adjustment…. other than the DH.”.

Lorenzen Wright's Body Reportedly Found in Memphis

Lorenzen WrightMemphis homicide investigators arrived at the scene where the body of former NBA player and University of Memphis star Lorenzen Wright was reportedly found with multiple gunshot wounds on Wednesday.

Police spokeswoman Alyssa Macon-Moore would only confirm to FanHouse that a body had been found in southeast Memphis and homicide investigators were on scene. The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported that the body was indeed Wright's and WHBQ-TV reported that Lorenzen's body had sustained a dozen gunshot wounds. Both reports cited sources within the Memphis Police Department.

"This is an ongoing investigation," Macon-Moore said in an e-mail. "When further details are available we will update the media."

Deborah Marion, Wright's mother, and a handful of family members were among the nearly 200 people who gathered outside the crime scene Wednesday night, The Associated Press reported. The distraught Marion was turned away twice by officers, the second time as she attempted to run toward the scene.

What Happens in Vegas Stays Off ESPN

LeBron James LeBron James is at it again, folks, living it up in a den of sin, with an ESPN reporter taking notes, and then -- it would appear -- possibly pulling strings to get the story yanked. Oh, and then leaving the network, which grovels at his feet, to make a fool of itself by claiming that the story posted was an incomplete draft -- none of which ever reappeared.

Such is life in the offseason where one man, and his capacity for collusion, corruption, and calumny have become, yes, bigger than the NBA itself. John Lennon caught hell for saying that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus; LeBron James would, too, if he said what we've all made possible.

James is more possible than the Association right now, and not in a "Michael Jordan owns this sport" kind of way. He's a sideshow, a diversion when the only other thing going is USA Basketball and whatever crazy plot David Kahn hatches next.

But in between "The Decision" and The Cover-Up, there was, simply, The Mistake. It makes for far less juicy copy, and no one can fling around morality like its 1745. Really, though, this story never should have happened.

Bryan Colangelo Hints Chris Bosh Quit on Raptors

Bryan ColangeloFans may never know when exactly LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh first hatched the idea to band together to form a super team in Miami, but Toronto Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo seems convinced Bosh had his mind on bolting as a free agent long before he officially became a free agent.

In a Monday interview with FAN 590's Bob McCown (as transcribed by Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun), Colangelo complained that Bosh took an excessive amount of time returning from injury, an apparent reference to the seven games Bosh missed in February with a sprained ankle.

"Despite limited swelling and any excessive damage on an MRI, he felt like he needed to sit for six more games ... I'm not even questioning Chris' injury. I'm telling you he was cleared to play subject to tolerance on his part, and the tolerance just apparently wasn't there and he chose not to play," Colangelo said.

"The fact that our season was spiraling downward and we were hoping he'd come back sooner and we were also dealing with a few other things at that point ... we were really struggling there."

Damien Wilkins Works Out for Cavs, Along With Wafer, Anderson

Damien Wilkins Damien Wilkins' father played for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He would like to do so himself.

Wilkins, a free-agent swingman, said he worked out Tuesday with the Cavaliers. He said others in the workout included free-agent guards Von Wafer and Alan Anderson.

Wilkins, 30, is the son of Gerald Wilkins and nephew of Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins. His father played in the NBA from 1985-99, including 1992-94 with the Cavaliers. During that time, Damien averaged 25 points-per-game as an eighth-grader for Revere Middle School in Akron, Ohio.

"It went well,'' Wilkins said by phone about the workout in Cleveland. "They're a very good organization. They've got a great team even though they lost LeBron (James, an Akron native). I still think they can compete. They've got a really good coaching staff... I hope it works out (with the Cavaliers). I think I showed them I wasn't too proud to come in for a workout on short notice (from his home in the Atlanta area).''

Wilkins joked he has "a little bit of history'' in Akron although "not as much as the man who left.''

Wilkins, who averaged 5.6 points last season for Minnesota and has a six-year NBA career average of 7.2 after being undrafted in 2004, said he left without a contract offer from Cleveland. But that's not surprising since Cleveland is moving slowly following James' July 8 announcement he would bolt as a free agent to Miami.

The Cavaliers on Monday made their first significant move since then, acquiring guard Ramon Sessions, center Ryan Hollins and a 2013 second-round pick from Minnesota in exchange for guards Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair.

"(Sessions) was a great addition for them,'' said Wilkins, who played last season with the guard. "I'm surprised (the Timberwolves) let him go.''

Sources said Tuesday that Cleveland is one of four teams giving strong consideration to signing free-agent swingman Joey Graham. The others are Denver, Golden State and Miami. It remains to be seen if any of those teams will be willing to offer more than a minimum deal for Graham, who averaged 4.2 points last season for the Nuggets but scored 21 points in Denver's final game of the season, a Game 6 first-round playoff loss at Utah.

Wafer last played in the NBA in 2008-09 with Houston, and has a four-season scoring average of 6.2. Anderson played with Charlotte from 2005-07, averaging 5.8.

Wilkins said he could see himself playing for the minimum in his classification of $1.07 million. He made $3.3 million last season.

"I could see that happening, although it doesn't have to happen,'' Wilkins said of playing for the minimum. "I told my agent (Mark Bartelstein) I want the opportunity to play on a winning team and contribute more than dollars. If I'm able to contribute, the money will take care of itself (in the future).''

Wilkins was a rookie in 2004-05 when Seattle won the Northwest Division. But he hasn't been on a team since then to have won more than 35 games in a season.
