The correct internet response is “Did he Died?”. This was such an amazing catch that it trumped the R-Fed Tweener Video on ESPN’s top 10 plays. This rookie outfielder is batting .303 in 21 games in the bigs, and is exciting the Brewer faithful. I can only imagine what it sounded like to hear Bob Uecker call this catch. ( The picture above is of a Lorenzo Cain FAIL. Compare and contrast. )
Former Alabama guard Mikhail Torrance, who was on life support after sustaining a heart attack during a workout Aug. 20, walked without assistance for the first time Monday, giving his family and friends a jolt of optimism.
Torrance was just moved from the Intensive Care Unit at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and into a private room Sunday when his condition was upgraded to stable.
Torrance, 21, still hasn't spoken, but he has been responding to commands from his doctors and family members, who have been by his side from the start, according to agent Happy Walters.
Torrance also has been able to eat, and he cried when he first saw his girlfriend.
"This is like a miracle,'' Walters said. "He recognizes people. He laughs. He shows emotion. These are all good signs. Things are coming back. Everyone is really encouraged right now.''
ISTANBUL -- As Brazil's Leandro Barbosa walked by after Monday's game, Team USA's Chauncey Billups patted him on the back and said, "See you next week.''
After getting a scare in their first test in the World Championship, the Americans wouldn't be surprised if they run into Brazil in the medal round.
"I think so. I really do,'' Billups said of anticipating Brazil will get another crack at Team USA, which escaped with a narrow 70-68 victory at Abdi Ipekci Arena.
The Brazilians certainly hope that will be the case. And they feel confident they can beat the Americans after nearly doing so without Cleveland Cavaliers big man Anderson Varejao, who sat out Monday with a sprained left ankle.
Even Kevin Durant's 27 points and 10 rebounds weren't enough to keep the Americans from heavily perspiring down the stretch. With 3.5 seconds left and Team USA up, 70-68, Durant fouled Marcelo Huertas, who stepped to the free-throw line with a chance to force overtime.
Matt Kuchar and Tiger Woods are happy about where they’re going, even if the itinerary is entirely different. Kuchar won The Barclays with a sensational shot out of the rough to beat Martin Laird with a birdie in a playoff. The victory assures he will be at East Lake in Atlanta — which the Georgia Tech grad considers a home course — to play the Tour Championship for the first time.
Manny Ramirez helped the Boston Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and 2007. He powered the Los Angeles Dodgers to the NL West title two years ago with a stellar run at the plate. The Chicago White Sox are hoping he has one more playoff push left. Ramirez is expected to join the White Sox on Monday, giving the fading playoff contenders a big boost during a key 10-game road trip.
I am not a the biggest Wrestling fan, but I loved it back in the day. Early 90′s had Hulk Hogan, Sgt Slaughter, Ultimate Warrior, The Piper, The Undertaker, Jake the Snake, Rick the Model Martel etc… I woke up every Saturday morning and watched wrestling. It was what I did. I even watched the cartoon. I was a Hulkamaniac. When I cheered for Hogan, it gave him strength. I took my vitamins, and said my prayers. Hulkamania FTW.
I was a fan, but not the biggest fan. I am sure there are aficionados that know every move ever made, but I am not one. The wrestlers stay in the game for a long time. They change names. They change sides, from good to bad, and back again.
I saw these videos on youtube about the Dingo Warrior. That sounded so stupid to me. Why is someone trying to be the Ultimate Warrior? Is it Ultimate’s brother, or tag team partner? No. It is a young Ultimate Warrior. He was the Dingo Warrior before he was the Ultimate Warrior. I do not know what fear he was trying to instill with the name Dingo Warrior, but that was one of his first names. He was not always insane. at first he was quite tame. I am not 100% sure about the dates, but I will try to put the videos in Chronological order, so you can see the decent into absolute bonkers.
He actually starts off normal, but you can tell he wants to get tough. “The Dingo Is Mad”
“I will write Dingo 500 times on your face, with your own blood” = Awesome!
It took the reigning world champions six quarters, but Spain finally hit on all cylinders in the second half of their second game at the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Izmir on Sunday. Behind Ricky Rubio's 11 assists and on-court wizardry, Spain defeated New Zealand 101-84. Spain, who was upset by France on Saturday in the opening game of Group D play, played much better defense against New Zealand in the second half.
The first half of Sunday's game looked eerily similar to Saturday for the Spanish national team, however. They went into the locker room on Sunday only holding a four-point advantage against New Zealand. However, when the second half started, Spain quickly displayed their firepower and proved why they are considered to be one of the favorites at this summer's World Championships. Spain opened the second half on a 9-0 run and never looked back.
The Spaniards outscored New Zealand by 13 points in the second half and finally took advantage of the slower and undersized New Zealand team. There was no answer on the court for 7-foot-1 center Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies. The big man led all scorers in the game with 22 points and stayed out of foul trouble in his 26 minutes of play.
Spain's Jorge Garbajosa, formerly of the Toronto Raptors, hit all four three-point attempts in the game. Many of Garbajosa's three-point shots sparked runs for the Spanish team that ran away with the game after a brief scare in the first half.
ISTANBUL -- Team USA gets its first real test Monday. But it might not be as much of one as originally thought.
A week after losing NBA big man Nene for the World Championship due to a leg injury, Brazil officials don't know yet whether they will have another NBA big man available in Anderson Varejao, who hasn't played since he suffered a sprained ankle in an Aug. 18 exhibition game. That includes having missed the first two games of the Worlds.
"I don't know if I'm going to play," Varejao told FanHouse on Sunday. "But I am feeling better, though."
The Cleveland big man could be pivotal to Brazil's chances of pulling an upset in the game that almost certainly will decide Group B. The teams are tied for first at 2-0.
"It is very important," Brazil center Tiago Splitter (above), who recently signed with San Antonio, said of having Varejao in an attempt to defeat the Americans. "I think Anderson is a guy who knows them very well. He is extra energy on the court, and we hope he's OK and he can play."
Heavily favored Get Stormy took control in the final sixteenth of a mile to win the $200,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap, beating National Kid by 2 3/4 lengths on the turf at Saratoga Race Course. The Tom Bush-trained 4-year-old, ridden by Javier Castellano, ran 1 1/8 miles over a firm inner turf course in 1:46.70 to earn $120,000 for owner Sullimar Stable.
Behind a brilliant performance from veteran guard Fadi El Khatib, Lebanon pushed past Canada 81-71 in Group D action. El Khatib, who injured his back earlier this summer and wasn't a sure thing to appear at the World Championship, dropped 31 points on Canada, 10 of those coming in a fourth quarter in which the Lebanese outscored Canada 24-13.
El Khatib, who was a Clipper for 10 days in 2003 but never saw NBA game action, is a legendary player in Lebanese basketball, along with former Heat center Rony Seikaly. Lebanon has traditionally been successful in Asian regional play, but has been overmatched at the top stages of international play. But El Khatib has done this before -- he averaged 17 points a game in the 2006 World Championship.
Perhaps it's good for Slovenia that only Dragic is playing in the World Championship here even if Dragic claims he would have been able to get along on the same team with Vujacic.
"We are professionals,'' Dragic said in an interview with FanHouse after scoring 16 points in an 80-56 win over Tunisia on Saturday, the day before his team faces the Americans. "We are playing for our national team. So if you have something against each other, we don't have to make this on the court.''
Tiger Woods is four shots behind going into the weekend at The Barclays, which can be interpreted two ways. He started the second round tied for the lead, was alone at top when he made the turn at Ridgewood and then made four bogeys over his last eight holes — including a missed putt from 20 inches — to shoot 39 on the back and fall four shots behind.
Kansas City rookie linebacker Cameron Sheffield has been released from the hospital after hurting his neck while making a tackle in a preseason game against Philadelphia. The Chiefs said in a statement Saturday that Sheffield has movement in all his extremities. He was hurt Friday night when his helmet made contact with Mike Bell’s helmet as he took down the Eagles running back near the…
Dee Brown, the guy with the Reebok Pumps, is still yelling at me. This isn't supposed to be happening.
What was supposed to happen was that I would be part of the crowd at the NBA D-League's Fantasy Clinic. Except things didn't quite go as planned. I did travel to Springfield as a guest of the NBA, staying in its hotel along with pretty much every single legend in town. There was time in the gym, and a lot of D-League swag.
Our happy campers (L to R): Wayne Washington, coach Dee Brown, Shoals, Renardo Espinosa
But there's really no way to sugarcoat it: this event didn't go off as planned. The two other times they had done this -- a year ago in Springfield, and then this summer in Vegas -- they had 20 some and 40 attendants, respectively. This year, a company that had reserved a decent number of spots pulled out at the least minute, leaving two FanHouse contest winners -- and me. That meant turning two days and change of activity into one afternoon, and putting this journalist-participant way more on the spot than he ever intended to be.
So that's how Dee Brown came to keep yelling at me, when I'd already planned to be ignored and take long breaks on the sidelines.
I can't say he made me a better basketball player. Brown got that making me into an athlete was a lost cause -- he liked my line about trying to get on "a level," as opposed to the next one. That didn't mean, though, that he didn't want me to see the game like he did. That's why, as I struggled through ball-handling drills with my non-existent left, Dee Brown demanded I respect the routine.
Atlanta Hawks guard Jamal Crawford plans to ask for a trade if he is not given an extension in the near future, a source close to him told FanHouse. The 11th-year veteran averaged 18 points last season, winning the league's Sixth Man of the Year award while helping the Hawks to a 53-29 record before they were swept by the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Crawford's is not the only situation at hand for Hawks general manager Rick Sund, who must also decide whether to lock up forward Al Horford by the league's Oct. 31 deadline for extending rookie contracts. If Horford does not sign an extension this summer, the Hawks can resume negotiations next summer when Horford will be a restricted free agent. The Hawks have until June 30, 2011 to extend Crawford's contract.
Having seen the Hawks give Joe Johnson a five-year, $119 million contract, Crawford is of the belief he shouldn't be without long-term security all season long. The tenor of forthcoming discussions regarding Horford could come into play as well, as Crawford will certainly grow even less patient if the Hawks moves quickly on securing the forward's future.
Previously known as a volume shooter, Crawford has certainly raised his value since he was traded to Atlanta last summer, as his one season with the Hawks was the first time in his career that his high-scoring ways didn't go for naught. He reached the playoffs for the first time in his career, and his field-goal percentage of .449 and three-point percentage of .382 were his highest over a full season.
It's not known how motivated, if at all, Sund is to extend Crawford. But clearly, Crawford wants out sooner rather than later if Sund doesn't envision him in the Hawks' long-term plans. If Sund does opt to trade Crawford, there would be no shortage of suitors, as Crawford's explosive scoring off the bench and $10 million expiring contract could help any team.

Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber isn’t quite predicting a Big Ten title, but he says his team could be “very, very good.” Weber talked about this year’s team Thursday night. He says he’s seen his team picked as high as ninth in the country and he’s more excited about Illinois’ prospects than he’s been in a while.
Guard C.J. Henry has transferred from Kansas to Southern Nazarene University in the NAIA. The Oklahoma City school announced Friday that Henry was one of three players transferring in from Division I schools. Henry was the New York Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2005 draft but returned to playing basketball after three years and signed with Memphis.
If you love sports blogs, like I do, then you loved Ballhype, like I did. It passed away earlier this week. Many people have already gone into great details on the ins and outs of the abrupt end to Ballhype. I just want to talk about … how much I miss it, and what it meant to me.
I first learned about Ballhype after I had been blogging for a few months, and I was blown away. Every sports blogger was there already and they were all a buzz about blogging about sports, and the sport of blogging.
I quickly met all these cool people that turned out to be sports bloggers. The owners of the site, Erin and Jason Gurney, were so incredibly nice. As I fumbled through my first years of sports blogging, I must have sent them more than a few emails talking about the front page, edits that I wanted to make to my submissions, and basically bugging them.
They were always, almost to a fault, nice, encouraging, responsive, and cool. I say “almost to a fault” because that gave me a false sense of security. I thought that every sports blogger was a really nice/ cool person. Even though, after 3 years, I have had a few bad experiences with “Big Timers” I continue to believe that the easily irritated/irritating people are far outnumbered by the truly awesome, constantly nice, sports bloggers that are a fountain of resources, wit, and knowledge.
I met so many friends on Ballhype. I know that “friends” is not a word that anyone with an IQ is supposed to use when referring to someone that they just met on the Interweb, but it is true. I met so many sports bloggers, Hyped their well written posts, I left them messages, and they left me messages. I visited their blog and soon I made Google groups and Twitter lists where I interact with hundreds of Sports Bloggers every day. A lot of these people are, and will continue to be, close personal friends. This could not have been possible without Ballhype.
Someone said that Ballhype was taken over by Twitter.
Twitter is like yelling on a New York street corner, and hoping that people will hear you. ( unless you are famous, then I am sure Twitter is a blasty blast. ). Ballhype was a family. Erin and Jason were the cool parents. Every blogger was a sibling. Every day was Thanksgiving. If you didn’t feel the love, then you are dead inside.
After the site was sold, to Daily Radar which must be an amazing company, you could tell that they wanted to make the site into a Billion Dollar idea. It turns out that it was just a several Million Dollar idea, that got messed up.
I honestly can not say enough about how much I used Ballhype in my every day blogging. There were countless blogging tools and resources. Erin and Jason and the rest of the original Ballhype crew can not be thanked enough.
