Bulls Bosses Still Have No Clue What to Do About Vinny Del Negro

Last week, Vinny Del Negro seemed emboldened by rumors of his imminent demise, responding to allegations his bosses were ready to dismiss the coach with laughter. Del Negro told the media that in his daily talks with Bulls management (John Paxson and Gar Forman) he had received full confidence he'd keep his job all year.

Well, Forman, who has been hard to find of late, finally spoke to reporters before Chicago's Tuesday night game against Indiana. I have a feeling Del Negro feels substantially less confident in his Chicago future after reading what Forman had to say.

According to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, when asked if Del Negro will soon be fired because of the team's disappointing performance, Forman said that "Vinny is our coach" and that management is "exploring all options to get better" and so on. Not once did Forman say Del Negro will be the coach for the foreseeable future, or did he offer a vote of confidence. And while Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski sees this as a betrayal of sorts by the management team, I see this as Forman having no clue what his bosses -- Paxson and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf -- will decide to do with Del Negro.

Kevin Garnett Out With Knee Injury

PHOENIX -- Doc Rivers told reporters during Wednesday's morning shootaround that Kevin Garnett's availability for the Celtics' game against the Suns that evening would be a game-time decision. It wasn't quite game time when Rivers met with the media again a little less than an hour before tip-off, but he had made up his mind: Garnett was sitting due to soreness in his right knee -- and in all likelihood, was going to miss more than one game.

"I just decided that if I was debating it, the basketball gods were probably telling me to go with [my initial thought]," Rivers said. "So, we sat him down. We've got to wait for it to heal, and we'll see how long that takes."

Rivers said that he also expects Garnett to miss Boston's home game against the Raptors Saturday, but he hopes to have his player back for next Wednesday's contest in Miami.

8RV #8: The 8 Greatest Athletes Of The 00?s

EVERY TUESDAY David Chalk, renowned, acclaimed and beloved baseball writer from 7th Inning Stache, Bugs&Cranks and occasionally Big League Stew throws up Eight Random Videos to entertain and/or enlighten right here on NESW SPORTS.

The calendar is starting to get all retrospectivical, so I give you the undisputable 8 Greatest Athletes of the past decade in this week’s 8RV, in alphabetical order by last name, accompanied by random videos of said 8 Greatest Athletes:

1. Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds is truly The Greatest Player On Planet Earth (The G-POPE), and certainly the greatest athlete of the last decade. He broke the single-season home run record in 2001, then the career mark in 2007. In the past year, he has been compared favorably to President Barrack Obama and Martin Luther King, to the Dalai Lama, and to Rosa Parks. And he has been tattooed on the backs of his admirers:

2. Santana Moss

It’s been a rough decade-plus for fans of the NFL’s greatest franchise. But one Monday night miracle made the second Joe Gibbs era worthwhile.

3. Shaquille O’Neal

The most dominant NBA player since Wilt Chamberlain, the most personable player ever, four rings in seven years.

4. David Ortiz

Sure his struggles since Manny was banished have raised questions, but Ortiz practically saved baseball all by himself with his heroics in the 2004 ALCS. Two world titles and being one of the most personable players in baseball earns him a place on this list, as does his reggaeton video (translated lyrics here):

5. Alexander Ovechkin

The greatest player since Gretzky has restored Washington hockey to respectability after that awful Jagr debacle.

6. Carlos Pena

There are plenty of deserving Devil Rays, but El Gato Del Crimen may be the best of them all. And if you ask him nicely during spring training, he will glady sign your taco:

7. Manny Ramirez

Probably the best baseball player of the decade not named Bonds, Manny Ramirez is also a fine role model and a strong supporter of Dominican hip hop:

8. Michael Vick

If there is any athlete as great as Bonds who was more unjustly persecuted this decade, it would be the great Michael Vick. Before the gross miscarriage of justice that led to his unfortunate incarceration, Vick was the most exciting player in pro football for the first half of the decade. Now, Vick has earned the respect of his teammates in Philadelphia, who voted unanimously to award him the prestigious Ed Block Award for Courage. Hopefully the playoff-bound Eagles will come to their senses and let Vick lead them to their first Super Bowl title. (Because Donovan McNabb sure isn’t gonna do it.)

NBA Player of the Decade: Tim Duncan

Filed under:

It's difficult to surmise how the NBA of the Noughties will be remembered. It isn't as if the 1990s lacked for storylines beyond the obvious; it's just that the obvious, the dominance of Michael Jordan's Bulls, let little historical, mainstream sunlight reach points outside Chicago.

Our ending decade suffers no such problems. We have dynasties, the Lakers early in the millennium and a Spurs reign we will soon discuss in better depth. But we lack a suffocating talent so clearly better than his peers he renders them footnotes. While LeBron James exits the decade as the game's almost obviously most transcedant talent, the same could have been said of late '80s MJ. It wasn't 'til the rings rained that Jordan really took over the NBA. LeBron has yet to taste the ultimate success, and as such remains mortal in NBA discourse.

Hawks Held Close to Historic Futility

Hawks ScorelessATLANTA -- Perhaps FedEx officials were standing courtside, ready to ship the ball to the Hall of Fame. Or would that be to the Hall of Lame?

For nearly nine minutes, Atlanta had not scored a single point in the fourth quarter Tuesday night against Cleveland. Dusty pages were being turned back in the NBA record book.

Has a team in league history ever not scored in a quarter?

Nope.

Two teams once scored just two points in a quarter. And Cavaliers coach Mike Brown was a San Antonio assistant in 2002-03 when the Spurs held Denver to three points in the first, still a record for that quarter.

"It was like, 'I don't want to be in the record book if we don't score,''' said Atlanta center Al Horford.

The Enemies List, Vol 8

Welcome back, NESWers, to your weekly burst of rancor from your old pal DMtShooter, moonlighting from Five Tool Tool. Every week you can chew on some tasty dislike; we call it the Enemies List. And with that, let?s go straight to the hate.

5) Rick Adelman. I’m not sure, really, if Tracy McGrady is an outstanding basketball player. He’s never made it out of the first round, seems to invent injuries, and is likely to go to his fourth pro team any day now. But he is also a career 21.9 points per game scorer, with reasonable rebound and assist numbers — which is to say, a guy that you should be able to use. But not Rockets’ coach Rick Adelman, who responded to T-Mac’s latest return from injury to give him utter scrub numbers, leading to a public severing of team from player.

Now, you can blame McGrady for not just sucking it up and taking the bench minutes; that’s certainly going to be the most prominent reaction, especially when you consider Adelman’s salary against McGrady’s. But the bigger issue, really, is wasted resources. Rather than be straight with his ex-star and just release him in the off-season, Adelman attempted to have it both ways, by having McGrady around as an insurance policy / object lesson to his coachly authority. That’s not how the NBA works, or how you handle high-priced talent; you either cut it clean or hitch up the wagon. By doing this halfway nonsense, Adelman has minimized the return on investment that the team could get for him, and given the Association’s haters more fuel.

4) Albert Haynesworth. You’d think that a 7-year, $100 million contract would be enough to keep a football player quiet, but no. According to multiple sources, the Redskins’ not so shiny new toy was on the verge of organizing a player boycott due to his contentious relationship with defensive coordinator Greg Blache.

The problem with Haynesworth’s lack of worth isn’t that another high-priced Redskins free agent is going to go bust, or even whether or not Blache’s schemes are partly to blame for the late-season defensive collapse. It’s that he’s going to screw the pooch for other, better men in the trenches. Any number of lineman deserve more than they get in today’s NFL, especially when you consider the increased risk of concussion that you get from modern line play.

3) Decade wankers.
In this decade, I more or less doubled my salary, became a homeowner and a father (twice), wrote three books and started my blog, moved three times and didn’t gain weight. Do you really care? No, of course not. Just like you don’t care about all of the end of the decade retrospectives / bloghole fillers that the Internets and sports networks are suddenly shoving down your hole.

Nostalgia is pointless. It’s even more pointless when it’s for a decade that will be remembered for terrorism, war, and recessions. Let’s all just move on, OK?

2) Jon Gruden.
Look, I know that the World Wide Lemur’s coverage of live NFL games has always been regrettable at best. The current MNF crew is spectacularly better than the teeth-gnashingly awful Dennis Miller / Tony Kornheiser years, as well as the Joe Theismann / Paul Maguire super-positive yammer-a-thons.

But, um, still… rather than just be able to watch tonight’s wildly entertaining MNF overtime Bear win over the Vikings, countless millions had to hear yet another public fellating of Gruden’s personal lust object, Brett Favre. It didn’t matter that he stunk up the joint in the first half, or threw two probable picks on the game-tying drive, or that the actual game-tying touchdown was much more a credit to otherworldly WR Sidney Rice than His Favreness. Gruden’s take?

“People have no idea how tough he is.”

In the post-game wrap-up (yes, I am a glutton for punishment), Gruden continued the work by going on at length about how Favre used everyone in the second half to score 30 points. You see, that first half — including a fumble in which the Vikings QB was never touched — clearly didn’t matter, despite being, well, the margin of defeat for a team that’s well on its way to blowing its chance for home field and a first round bye. Please, Daniel Snyder, make the world bettter by bringing This Guy back to the sidelines and away from a mic…

1) Jim Caldwell. This isn’t exactly a brave or novel stand here, but the simple fact of the matter is that, by throwing the game for the Jets last weekend and costing his team their chance at perfection, the Colts’ coach:

a) Committed fraud by pulling his starters against the Jets, therefore giving his fans an exhibition game for which they paid full pricxe

b) Played favorites with the Jets, leading conspiracy theorists to wonder if there’s hanky-panky to get a larger market team in the playoffs, since they didn’t sit anyone against Jacksonville

c) Replicated the inexplicable playoff failure pattern that they established earlier in the decade

d) Allowed the freaking Perfect Douchebag Dolphins, who went undefeated against a shockingly cake schedule in a dramatically different era, to continue to shake their historic asses in everyone’s face for another year

Thanks, rook. Hope you lose your first playoff game…

Fellow haters, that?s all I got. See you next week.

Big Baby Taking Baby Steps in Return

Glen DavisToss out the pacifier. Big Baby has grown up.

Well, maybe.

The Boston Celtics still want to see what happens in the future with Glen Davis, the burly power forward who suffered an embarrassing broken right thumb just before the start of the regular season after getting into a fight with a friend.

But Davis has returned to the court, and has provided some encouraging play in his first three games back. He's determined to show his Big Baby moniker is not going to continue to define his maturity.

"No matter how old you think you are, you're never as grown up as you think you are because you still make kid mistakes, childish mistakes,'' Davis said in an interview with FanHouse about what he has learned since the Oct. 25 incident. "When you go through a tough stretch like that, I think it's about character. I learned a lot about my character and what kind of person I really truly am. How I feel. It's just a life lesson that I had to go through to be the great player that I want to be one day.''

Lakers Left Searching for Answers After Loss to Suns

PHOENIX -- The Suns got themselves a convincing win over the Lakers on Monday, somewhat avenging the two road losses that they sustained in Los Angeles earlier this season. Phoenix was able to play their game offensively, while forcing most of the Lakers not named Kobe Bryant into a tougher-than-usual night of shooting.

But don't ask the Lakers -- or even the large group of media that covers the team both at home and on the road -- for the answers. Because after this one, all parties involved on the Los Angeles side seemed to be at a loss for words.

Can Clippers Afford to Let Camby Go? Time Will Tell

Filed under:

Marcus CambyLOS ANGELES -- If Kevin Garnett is The Big Ticket and Tim Duncan is The Big Fundamental, Marcus Camby is The Big Commodity.

With an expiring contract that has a salary-cap number of $9.15 million, the Los Angeles Clippers' big man might be the most coveted player who could be available as the Feb. 18 trade deadline approaches. While some teams would take anyone with such an expiring contract that has vital signs, Camby also can play.

"Everybody in the league would want him,'' Clippers coach and general manager Mike Dunleavy said in an interview with FanHouse. "He's probably the most valuable contract in the league from the standpoint if you're looking to trade for a guy with an expiring contract that has a lot of game. Most teams are trying to give up longer-term contracts for shorter-term contracts, and a lot of times those teams are willing to sacrifice in order to shorten the money. In this case, you wouldn't be sacrificing. That's why everybody wants him.''

Los Angeles Clippers' Baron Davis(notes) hits the game winning shot while being guarded by Boston Celtics' Rajon Rondo(notes) and Ray Allen(notes) to defeat the Celtics 92-90 in an NBA basketball game on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, in Los Angeles.

Baron Davis hit a long fallaway jumper at the buzzer, and the Los Angeles Clippers dramatically snapped the Boston Celtics’ nine-game road winning streak with a 92-90 victory on Sunday night. Rajon Rondo scored 20 points for the Celtics, but missed two potential go-ahead free throws — actually three, including another that was waved off — with 1.5 seconds left in just the Celtics’ second…

Rockets Put McGrady on Ice, Look for Solution

Filed under:

Rockets star-turned-roleplayer Tracy McGrady has put Houston in a bit of a bind. He's back, and while it's hard to tell whether he's been a boon or bane, he has played without re-aggravating his knee, on which he had microfracture surgery performed 10 months ago. As the team's longtime Alpha and its still-current highest paid player, McGrady feels it is time to get more minutes. He said as much earlier this week, after his sixth straight appearance of exactly seven minutes.

The Rockets apparently haven't decided whether to get McGrady back in the starting line-up. Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports that in the course of figuring it out, the team will actually sit McGrady for its weekend games (Saturday in New Jersey, Sunday in Cleveland). When the Rockets return to Houston, the franchise's management will discuss the rotation, and whether McGrady ought to be a big part of it.

Cavaliers Weigh Loyalty in Possible Ilgauskas Deal

Filed under:

LOS ANGELES -- Center Zydrunas Ilgauskas has been with Cleveland since draft night in 1996, tying him with the Lakers' Kobe Bryant for the longest ongoing tenure with one NBA team. He's fought back from devastating foot injuries to twice make All-Star teams. He's re-signed twice with the team.

There's no question Ilgauskas has been loyal to the Cavaliers. But will the Feb. 18 trade deadline pass with the Cavaliers being loyal to him?

Ilgauskas, who has an expiring $11.54 million contract and has told FanHouse he might retire at the end of the season, is a prime piece for Cleveland to trade in this perhaps all-or-nothing effort to win the championship and retain LeBron James. Ilgauskas said "of course'' he doesn't want to be dealt, but he doesn't believe any possible loyalty to him would factor into the decision and doesn't believe it should.

"That has nothing to do with how long I've been here,'' Ilgauskas said in an interview with FanHouse while the Cavaliers were at the Staples Center for Friday's big 102-87 win over the Lakers. "No matter how long I've played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, I always leave with the best memories because I had a great time here. Awesome time.''

Van Gundy Against Christmas Day Games

Van Gundy ChristmasMagic coach Stan Van Gundy sounded like an NBA Grinch when he arrived at Amway Arena for the Christmas Day game against the Boston Celtics.

The NBA has five games scheduled for today.

"I would rather not play on Christmas,'' Van Gundy said. "This is a day to spend with your family. But if I had my way, we'd take a five-day Christmas break.''

Rondo Gives Celtics Clear Edge

Rajon RondoORLANDO, Fla. -- Talk all you want about the Big Three of Boston, the stars that carried the Celtics to the NBA title two seasons ago. But it's Nos. 4, 5 and 6 who will put this team back in the NBA Finals in 2010.

If there was any doubt before Christmas who the best team was in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics cleared that up decisively Friday afternoon by pummeling the Orlando Magic, who have become a distant second-best.

Point guard Rajon Rondo, center Kendrick Perkins and newbie Rasheed Wallace are why the Celtics will strangle the Magic if they meet again as expected deep in the playoffs. It was 86-77 Celtics on Friday.

It doesn’t seem to matter who plays goal for the Chicago Blackhawks.
