Derek Fisher seems like a nice man, a professional, a thinker of calm demeanor. He's the president of the NBA Players Association, he loves his family -- immediate and professional -- and he has been very, very clutch at least twice. (Apologies in advance. The first one has one of the worst calls in sports broadcast history.)Then who knows what compelled him to set himself to try take a charge from Corey Brewer the other night at Stinkface Center*. Maybe it was his intelligence. (Getting in position and taking the charge would have prevented a sure two points.) Maybe it was his professionalism. (Fisher has always been willing to take one for the team.) Maybe he thought he'd get the benefit of the veteran-of-the-doubt call. (Fisher is in his 14th season, Brewer his third.)

Whatever the thought process in those quick, few seconds turned out to be the wrong decision for one of the better guys in the NBA. The ref rightfully swallowed his whistle and instead of goading Brewer into a turnover, Brewer threw some chicken on Fisher's grille and became the 21st Century version of Tom Chambers.
Bar-be-cue videos after the jump.
