WASHINGTON -- The decision to sentence Gilbert Arenas on March 26 for his guilty plea to felony possession of a gun without a license on Friday -- despite a request from his lawyer to the judge to hand it down much sooner than that -- all but wipes out the rest of the season for the Wizards' All-Star guard.
Arenas has been under indefinite suspension by the NBA since Jan. 6, and earlier Friday a league spokesman reiterated that commissioner David Stern would not make a final decision on Arenas' fate until the NBA's own ongoing investigation was finished.
But the March 26 date set Friday by D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert Morin for Arenas' sentencing, and to hear pre-sentencing reports from the two sides, leaves just 2 1/2 weeks in the NBA regular season. Including their game that night in Charlotte, the Wizards would have 12 games left, and Arenas would have missed 38 games. It is almost inconceivable that Stern would allow Arenas back before then; in suspending him after Arenas repeatedly made light of his situation, Stern said that he was "not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game.''
