Earlier this week, the Kings extended the contract of front office chief Geoff Petrie for three more years, keeping the longtime personnel boss employed through the 2012-13 season. A year ago, such a long extension would have seemed a longshot, despite long-held vocal support of Petrie by the Maloof family, who own the Kings. The team struggled through 2008-09 with little in the way of young talent. The June draft changed all that, and basically earned Petrie this extension. Sacramento had the league's best shot at the No. 1 overall pick, only to fail in the lottery and end up with the fourth pick. That ended up working out in Sacramento's favor, as superstar guard Tyreke Evans fell into the Kings' lap. Later in the first round, the Kings took Omri Casspi (one of the league's five most productive rookies this season). In the second round, the team scooped up bruiser Jon Brockman, who has instantly become a fan favorite.
