ORLANDO -- Coach Mike D'Antoni wasn't about to second-guess his boss and the gutting-the-roster, all-or-nothing strategy, but even he admitted Friday night there is a chance for disaster this summer with the New York Knicks. The Knicks are nearing the end of a multi-year roster juggling act that was done to create maximum salary cap room this summer, hoping it translates into the signing of two superstar free agents and a rebirth of the franchise.
The off-shoot has meant disaster on the court the last few seasons, resulting in 23, 32, and now 28 victories with four games remaining.
D'Antoni has dealt this season with an impossible task, coaching a roster in which only three of their 15 players have contracts beyond the end of this month.
At the end of the free agent rainbow could be LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, and a glorious future for the Knicks. Or it could be nothing but fool's gold.
"We have an opportunity to try and hit a home run. That's what we're trying to do. We've set ourselves up where at least we know there is a fastball coming. We're going to take a swing at it, and see what happens,'' D'Antoni said before the Knicks played the Magic.
