Possible defections are getting all the attention in the media these days. But USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo (above right with Team USA in Beijing in 2008) actually is thinking more about additions.
In an interview Monday with FanHouse, Colangelo did not express great concern that Denver star Carmelo Anthony might skip this summer's World Championships due to getting married. Colangelo said Team USA has a deep roster, and it is soon to expand by as many as five.
Colangelo said Boston guard Rajon Rondo and Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince have formally been invited to be on the roster, of which players will be selected for the Worlds and the 2012 Summer Olympics, and USA Basketball is anticipating their acceptance. And Colangelo said he's closing in on inviting Oklahoma City forward Jeff Green, Golden State guard Stephen Curry and Sacramento guard Tyreke Evans to be on the roster.
USA Basketball had indicated in February there would be the additions of Rondo and Prince. There were communication problems resulting in both of them not being selected that month to the initial 27-man roster, with Prince telling FanHouse he wouldn't be able to play in Turkey regardless due to injuries.
