Chamique Holdsclaw's WNBA passport got a Southwest stamp Friday when the San Antonio Silver Stars signed her for the season.Holdsclaw, who requested a trade from the Atlanta Dream before training camp earlier this month, was waived Wednesday after the team was unable to find a partner to deal with.
Holdsclaw, 32, who averaged 13.9 points and 4.4 rebounds for Atlanta last season, will apparently join San Antonio in time for the team's home game Saturday with Los Angeles.
"We are thrilled to have Chamique join the Silver Stars family," said Silver Stars General Manager Dan Hughes in a prepared statement. "Chamique and our staff felt it was such a great fit. We are excited to get to work with Chamique in a Silver Stars uniform."
Holdsclaw, the 1999 WNBA Rookie of the Year, has had a quixotic professional career. A six-time All-Star, Holdsclaw has averaged 17.3 points and 7.9 rebounds in the league. However, the four-time collegiate All-American left the Washington Mystics in the middle of the 2004 season, after she disclosed that she was being treated for depression.
