Tracy McGrady is one of the biggest names still available in the legendary NBA free agent market, which is otherwise quickly going cold. McGrady hasn't been a major contributor for basically two full seasons. With Houston in 2008-09, T-Mac slid into the backseat due to a knee injury which limited him to only 35 games, as Yao Ming, Ron Artest and Shane Battier vaulted the Rockets into the second round for the first time during the Yao/T-Mac era. Last year, McGrady appeared in only six games for the Rockets before being sat and then traded to New York, where he played in 24 games, often horribly. It's no wonder, then, that so many teams have passed on McGrady this summer, even at the assumed bid of the veteran's minimum. But there may be a landing spot after all. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that if McGrady meets certain conditions -- reasonable health and a willingness to come off the bench -- in a workout Monday in Chicago, the Bulls are prepared to offer the former scoring champion a contract.
The Bulls' starting five seems set, with free agent signing Ronnie Brewer joining Derrick Rose in the backcourt, and incumbent Luol Deng slotted at small forward with Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah up front. Kyle Korver is the top bench option at the wing positions, with C.J. Watson expected to handle back-up point guard duty for the most part. James Johnson, a 2009 draft pick, can play both forward positions. McGrady would fill in at small forward and shooting guard, in all likelihood.
