Vinny Del Negro will be named the next coach of the Clippers, according to two sources close to the process. The agreement, which was first reported by FanHouse, is in principle and has yet to be finalized.
The former Chicago coach won the job over former Minnesota coach and current Dallas assistant Dwane Casey, with both candidates conducting two interviews and the second round coming to a conclusion on Tuesday in Los Angeles. It was a rematch of their faceoff of two years ago, when Del Negro was given the Bulls job over Casey en route to two tumultuous, albeit fairly successful, seasons in Chicago.
According to sources close to the process, owner Donald Sterling preferred Del Negro all along. General manager Neil Olshey is believed to have leaned more strongly toward Casey, with team president Andy Roeser somewhere in between. And while Olshey was told he had veto power on the final decision, the fact remains that the executive who is entering his first full season on the job had very little incentive to take such a strong stance while on such new ground.
