And the Washington Mystics were the team that emerged on top, needing a 90-81 win over the playoff-bound Atlanta Dream in order to secure the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference Sunday.
The Mystics are the biggest surprise in the WNBA this year, considering that the team's star player Alana Beard sat out the season with an ankle injury and the Indiana Fever, the runner-up team in the league last season, returned this season with its team intact.
Washington, who won six straight games to close the season, will take on Atlanta -- who have lost six of seven heading into the playoffs -- in the first round and will have home-court advantage in the best-of-three series for the first time in franchise history.
