Ted Leonsis Fined $100K by NBA for Talk of Hard Salary Cap

Ted LeonsisTed Leonsis, majority owner of the Washington Wizards and owner of the Washington Capitals, said on Wednesday that he expects the NBA to soon possess a hard salary cap model similar to the NHL's.

The league's collective bargaining agreement will expire after the season, and many owners are looking at the NHL and their hard salary cap for direction. This summer, FanHouse's Sam Amick reported that if owners are successful in creating a hard cap similar to the NHL's in the neighborhood of $45 million, high-salaried teams like the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers may be forced to release star players to fit the cap number.

The NBA currently employs a soft salary cap, which allows teams to circumvent certain rules and exceed the league's "cap number" in order to build winning teams.

Leonsis, who is well-versed with both the workings of the NBA and NHL salary cap models, spoke to a group of Northern Virginia business leaders before the Wizards training camp session on Wednesday.

Taurasi Pushes US Past Aussies, Into World Championship Quarters

Diana TaurasiFor the first three quarters Wednesday, the United States' entry in the FIBA women's World Championships had reduced their second-round showdown with Australia to nothing more than unfulfilled hype, as the Americans led by as many as 24 points in the second quarter and by as much as 15 to start the fourth.

The Americans got their win, but not before the Aussies, who, like the U.S., finished first-round play unbeaten, steadily sliced the deficit in the fourth to the final 83-75 margin.

Things might have gotten even tighter for the U.S. if not for guard Diana Taurasi, who posted big baskets in the fourth quarter on the way to 24 points.

Taurasi downplayed the significance of Wednesday's game, perhaps sensing the two teams may meet again in the gold-medal game.

"I don't take too much from this time," said Taurasi. "They're the defending world champions. They're a great team and they're going to come out here and fight every possession."

Ravens DE Pryce waived, may be re-signed

The Baltimore Ravens waived defensive end Trevor Pryce on Wednesday, though coach John Harbaugh says it’s likely the team will soon re-sign the 14-year veteran. The roster move makes room for safety Ken Hamlin, who was released by Baltimore last week. Hamlin will probably contribute on special teams in this Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ravens RB Rice misses practice

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice misses practice because of a bruised right knee. His absence Wednesday left open the possibility that Willis McGahee will start this week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. McGahee says he’s “up for the challenge,” expects Rice to play. Rice walked in the locker room Wednesday without a noticeable limp, but the Ravens would not let him…

George Karl's Return Speaks Loudly, Even if His Voice Does Not

George KarlDENVER -- Just in case, George Karl showed up with a whistle.

Tuesday marked the first day of practice for the Denver Nuggets coach since he was lost in March for the final 1 1/2 months of last season due to a form of throat cancer. If Karl's voice didn't hold up, an electronic whistle was in his pocket.

Karl said he didn't use the whistle except to joke around with players. His voice, although a bit strained following Monday's media day and team meetings, was good enough to make it through the first day of training camp.

"When you have a bad practice and guys have a lazy mentality, you might use it then,'' Karl said. "But (Tuesday) was very professional and very solid.''

And very uplifting. Nuggets players were thrilled to have their coach back on the court.

"Seeing him energetic, positive, you can tell he's excited about it,'' said forward Carmelo Anthony.

D-League to Adopt Rule Changes Similar to FIBA, NBA Could Follow Suit

Filed under:

The NBA Development League is a league that has been developing players, coaches, officials and even dance team members for the NBA since its beginnings in the 2001-2002 season, but the D-League's planned rule changes for this upcoming season could represent the largest impact it's had on the big league thus far.

The NBA Development League plans to alter its rules this season to incorporate the FIBA-like goaltending rules, meaning that once the ball strikes the rim, players will be allowed to either swat the ball off the rim or tip it in unlike the NBA's current rules that state that an imaginary cylinder exists that has the basket as its base and touching the ball while any part of it is in this cylinder -- and still has a chance to go in -- is a violation. The league will also institute a three-minute overtime as opposed to the current NBA-standard five-minute overtime, with the same rules being instituted that are currently used in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter.

These rule changes are rumored to have been a request from the NBA as an experiment, presumably similar to the D-League's testing of the new synthetic basketball prior to it's official introduction into the NBA for the 2006-2007 season. The new basketball didn't last for long in the NBA, however, as NBA commissioner David Stern brought back the original leather basketball less than halfway into the season.

Nuggets Notebook: George Karl 'Disappointed' Son Coby Was Cut

DENVER -- Denver coach George Karl is excited to be back on the court. He'd be even more thrilled if his son could be part of it.

After missing the final 1 ½ months of last season due to a form of throat cancer, Karl will start training camp Tuesday with the Nuggets. But not on hand will be son Coby Karl, a guard who signed last week with a Spanish team after being waived last month by Denver.

"I was very disappointed,'' George Karl said Monday about the Nuggets having let his son go rather than fully guarantee his contract for this season.

Coby Karl was signed by the Nuggets for the final week of the regular season last April, and finished the campaign with the team. With his father out battling cancer, part of the move was done to lift the spirits of the coach.

Coby Karl would have had his minimum contract of $854,389 guaranteed for 2010-11 had he remained on the Nuggets past Aug. 15. He was let go right at the deadline, and last week signed a one-year deal with CB Granada in Spain.

Steve Nash, Alvin Gentry Hope Change Turns Into a Chance for Suns

Filed under:

PHOENIX -- Change is inevitable in the NBA; players come and go, and franchises change direction frequently for a multitude of reasons. But for a team that finished last season just two wins away from making it to the Finals, you'd think that change might have been slowed for the Suns, if not halted altogether.

Phoenix was subjected to more than its fair share of shake-ups this offseason, after finishing up a campaign where the team was more successful than perhaps even its own members ever thought possible. The Suns weren't exactly rewarded for making the Western Conference finals, however.

The team saw the departure of front office leaders Steve Kerr and David Griffin and, of course, the loss of All-Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire from the starting lineup will have an even bigger effect. He left for the max contract in NYC that the Phoenix franchise was unwilling to give.

Those losses, along with new roster additions Hedo Turkoglu, Hakim Warrick and Josh Childress, make for a lot of changes as the Suns head into this season. Complaining about it won't do any good, and this Phoenix team is as optimistic as any in the league. But that didn't mean that there wasn't at least a little bit of time for reflecting on what might have been.
