This much is certain: Geno Auriemma will have lots of familiarity with the roster of the U.S. women's team, as he has coached half of the players at the University of Connecticut.Five former Huskies (guards Sue Bird, right, and Diana Taurasi; forwards Swin Cash and Ashja Jones and center Tina Charles) and one current UConn player, forward Maya Moore, were selected to the 12-player U.S. roster that will compete in the world championships which open Thursday in the Czech Republic.
In all, 11 of the 12 players were chosen from WNBA rosters by a panel assembled by USA Basketball. Those players include forwards Tamika Catchings, Candice Dupree and Angel McCoughtry, guard Lindsay Whalen and centers Jayne Appel and Sylvia Fowles.
Two players, forward Seimone Augustus and guard Kara Lawson, who were part of the 2008 team that won the gold medal at the Olympics in Beijing, were cut from the final roster. The U.S. has not won a world championship since 2002 and finished third in 2006.
