The Texas Legends, the expansion team in the NBA D-League this season, had to start somewhere. With the Los Angeles Defenders taking the season off, the league granted the Legends their pick of the 14 "Returning players" for the Defenders. What does this mean? It means that if those players choose to return to the D-League this season, the ten players Texas selected today will be allocated to Texas and not available in the D-League draft. Texas will have their rights.
The list does feature a few notables. Joe Crawford stands out as a significant player to hold the rights to. Crawford, whose brother Jordan Crawford was drafted by the Hawks last season, averaged 17.8 points and 3.3 assists per game last year before heading to Europe. He's not currently signed with a European team, so it's possible he could decide to give the D-League another try.
Diamon Simpson (pictured above) averaged 15.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game last season and will turn just 23 before the start of the season. Unfortunately, Simpson is already locked up playing overseas, and is unlikely to return to an expansion franchise.
If the Legends can convince a few of the other players to return, they'll at least have a base to start with. Here's the rest of the expansion draft:
