Seattle's Lauren Jackson, Brian Agler Win Top WNBA Awards

Seattle Storm center Lauren Jackson (pictured right) became the third WNBA player to be selected Most Valuable Player three different times, while her coach, Brian Agler, was chosen Coach of the Year, the league announced Thursday.

Jackson, a 6-foot-5 center from Australia, outdistanced Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings and New York Liberty guard Cappie Pondexter
to join Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes as three-time MVP recipients. Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi, the 2009 MVP, finished fourth while Washington Mystics forward Crystal Langhorne finished fifth.

Jackson, who received 22 first place votes from a panel of 39 sportswriters and broadcasters, was fourth in the WNBA in scoring (20.5 ppg) and seventh in rebounding (8.3 rpg) -- and placed in the top seven in three other categories: blocks, free-throw percentage and double-doubles -- in leading the Storm to a franchise record 28 wins.

Agler, meanwhile, guided Seattle to a perfect 17-0 home record as well as to the league's second best start through the first 20 games. Agler, who previously coached at Minnesota in the WNBA and at Columbus in the defunct American Basketball League, received 17 of 39 firs
t-place votes from the media panel, edgin
g out New York's Anne Donovan (13 votes). Washington's Julie Plank placed third.

Agler and Jackson were expected to receive their trophies before Thursday's first game of the Western Conference finals between Seattle and Phoenix at Key Arena.
