DALLAS -- There at least is a consolation to the consolation prize getting injured. That's the word from the Chicago Bulls on forward Carlos Boozer going down for as long as 10 weeks with a broken right hand suffered last Saturday. Okay, the Bulls didn't call Boozer, signed last summer after they couldn't get LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh, a consolation prize. But they did use that word in describing his injury.
"Four (of the weeks Boozer will be out) are in the preseason, and we take some consolation in that,'' said guard Kyle Korver, who had played with Boozer in Utah before also signing with the Bulls during their consolation summer of 2010.
At least Chicago's summer wasn't as bad as the disastrous one in 2000, when they also had oodles of salary-cap room and ended up with Ron Mercer as their top signee. That's not a consolation prize, that's picking the wrong door on "Let's Make a Deal'' and getting a goat pulling a cart.
The Bulls carved out cap room last summer to try to get two really big-time free agents. They even gave away solid guard Kirk Hinrich to Washington for nothing in their quest.
When the dust settled, the Bulls had turned into Jazz East. In addition to landing Boozer and Korver, they inked free-agent guard Ronnie Brewer, who had played with Utah from 2006 until last February before finishing last season in Memphis.
