The Chicago Bulls have reached agreement with center Joakim Noah on a five-year, $60 million contract extension, according to Sam Smith, who writes for the team's official website. The extension will kick in for the 2011-12 season and run through 2016.Noah, 25, has become a dependable defender and rebounder for the Bulls since the team made him the No. 9 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. Noah had run-ins with coaches Scott Skiles and Jim Boylen as a rookie, but excelled under Vinny Del Negro. Last season, Noah averaged 10 points and 11 rebounds while starting 54 of 64 games.
Is that plus the improvement you'd expect from a 25-year-old worth $12 million a season for the prime of a starting center's career? In the current NBA, "yes" would be the resounding answer. But with the league's salary future in tremendous flux, why the Bulls jumped on an early extension is a real mystery. The league's franchise owners are seeking to dramatically cut the share of revenue tabbed for player salaries; depending on how things shake out, Noah could constitute up to a quarter of the Bulls' annual payroll.
