DENVER -- You've heard speculation about players who are in no hurry to come back from an injury because they're in a contract year. But players usually don't say it directly.Kenyon Martin said it Thursday.
"The day I come back is the day I come back,'' said the Denver forward, who is out after undergoing knee surgery nearly four months ago and admits he's "upset'' the Nuggets didn't give him a contract extension last summer.
"(It is) my last year of my deal. We all know it. Ain't nobody in a hurry to give me (another) one. So I'm not going to be in a hurry to come back and risk it. Think about it. Ain't nobody in a hurry to give me a contract, so why would I be in a hurry to rush back and risk further injury? It makes all the sense in the world. I've thought about it.''
Martin only has said he'll be out another "few months'' after undergoing surgery for a torn left knee patella. The Nuggets have offered no timetable for his return.
Complicating matters is Martin elected to not have his surgery done with a Nuggets doctor and instead went with Vail, Colo., specialist Richard Steadman. But Steadman is regarded as one of the nation's top knee doctors.
