Whatever might be said of the United States women's team's efforts to win a gold medal in the FIBA world championships, what can't be said is that the Americans lack the killer instinct. The South Korean team and a Czech Republic audience can provide a living testament after the U.S. took a 26-point halftime lead in their Friday quarterfinal meeting and ballooned it out to a 106-44 decision.
Not only did the Americans hold an opponent to a tournament low, but the U.S. squad managed to play the entire 40 minutes while being whistled for only five fouls, though they played much of the second half in a zone defense, to prepare for the later medal rounds.
"The beginning of the game, we knew we had a big advantage over them, size-wise, quickness-wise, and we are obviously a much deeper team," said U.S. coach Geno Auriemma. "We have more options. Korea was down to nine players, so it was very difficult for them to try to do anything with some of our players. But we didn't want to start the game and not be ready and not be 100 percent."
The US (7-0) will meet Spain (61) in one semifinal Saturday, with the winner advancing to Sunday's gold medal final against the winner of the Belarus-Czech Republic semifinal.
