It's true. Very few players could inflict the kind of damage Arenas could on a game. Everything from scoring at an unstoppable pace, to hitting game-winning shots like he was shooting them in a gym all by himself. Forget the quirky personality, and forget the "incident" from last season that got him suspended. From a purely basketball standpoint, Arenas on the court was legend, pure and simple.
As anyone watching him in the Wizards' 125-108 loss to the Suns on Sunday knows, the Arenas of old is gone forever. And that includes Gilbert himself.
If we're being honest, the Arenas that brought devastation upon his opponents whenever the mood struck has been gone for some time now. The 2006-07 season was the last where Gilbert truly dominated for extended stretches, but this current road trip -- and maybe his current circumstances -- seemed to make that magical time worth revisiting.
The last time the Wizards won in Phoenix was in December 2006, when Arenas torched the Suns for 54 points. Steve Nash wasn't too shabby himself on that night, contributing 42 points and 12 assists in the losing effort.
"That was many years ago," Arenas said, somewhat wistfully. "Many years ago."
