Surrey Star took the lead at the top of the stretch Sunday and held off a rally from favorite Major Art to win the $100,000 La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita. Returning to the turf after two shoddy starts on dirt, the Irish-bred 3-year-old Surrey Star and jockey Joe Talamo cut to the rail to take the lead as the field drifted out and won by a half-length for the colt’s first U.S.
