Thompson broke the record set by Lisa Leslie.
Thompson finished with 23 points in a 92-83 loss to San Antonio, surpassing Leslie's total of 6,263 points. Leslie retired last year.
Thompson, 35, is the lone original WNBA player still in the league. She was the league's first No. 1 draft pick back in 1997 and won four championships with the Houston Comets.
The Los Angeles native is a nine-time All-Star and a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
She came to Los Angeles when the Comets folded after the 2008 season and has taken on a larger role with the Sparks this season following a season-ending shoulder injury to standout Candace Parker.
The Sparks are enduring a tough season with a 10-18 record and are a half game out of the Western Conference's final playoff spot.
