Raptors forward Ed Davis, the No. 13 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, could miss the start of his rookie season after injuring his meniscus during a pick-up game outside of Toronto this week. The seriousness of the injury and the necessary fix is not yet known, according to the Toronto Star's Doug Smith. But the injury can be quite serious. It was a meniscus tear that hobbled Brandon Roy late last season and later required surgery. The first of Gilbert Arenas' unfortunate setbacks was a meniscus tear. It's not clear whether Davis tore his meniscus, and small tears are regularly played through, though one would have to believe the Raptors, who don't figure to do more than contend for a low playoff seed this season, will be cautious with their prized rookie.
Davis is no stranger to the training table, having broken a bone in his wrist last season at North Carolina. The injury ended the power forward's season early and certainly hurt his draft stock, as Davis had previously been considered a lock for the top 10; several draft experts even pegged Davis for the top 10 had he left college in 2009 after a spare freshman season. But concerns about Davis' ability to score against bigger NBA bodies and to defend power forwards reliably dropped his stock in the run-up to the '10 draft.
Davis averaged 12.6 points and six rebounds a game in five Vegas Summer League contests during July.
Should Davis see the shelf, he wouldn't be alone among lottery picks: the Warriors' Ekpe Udoh, picked No. 6, will be out until at least January after breaking his wrist in July.
