LeBron James is out of the playoffs now, and while he isn't officially a free agent until July 1, the speculation and conversation about where he might end up next season has already begun. It's one thing for us in the media to discuss possible destinations for the league's reigning MVP, but it's quite another for team personnel to make similar public statements. And in fact, when those inside the league decide to talk about players on other teams before the free agency period officially opens at midnight on July 1, there's a word for that: tampering.
If the comments are severe enough, that word has some fines and other punishments associated right along with it. For Mark Cuban's sake, he should hope the league decides that his remarks about being interested in James were more innocuous than intentional.
Cuban, like everyone else in the NBA recently, was asked (in an interview with CNNMoney.com) if he was interested in LeBron James as a free agent. And instead of declining to respond with a "no comment," he had this to say.
