MIAMI -- The Miami Heat got their first four-game winning streak a quarter of the way into the season as they handed the Atlanta Hawks their first loss in six games on Saturday night, 89-77. The first meeting between the division rivals now leaves both teams with the same record and trailing the Orlando Magic by two-and-a-half games in the Southeast Division. The Heat avoided a mental letdown after the emotionally-charged victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers before embarking on their longest road trip so far this season. More importantly, the win was against a quality opponent (albeit one missing their leading scorer in Joe Johnson) and it was won in crunch time when the Hawks stormed back to within two points with five minutes left in the game.
"You build toughness," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra afterwards. "You talk about toughness from adversity, well that shows up in a game like this."
